چکیده

Rebooting is one of the commonly used approaches to recover from undesired crash or performance degradation in software systems. Recently, however, planned and periodic restart or rejuvenation has been proposed as a reliability management tool for avoiding unwanted failure of long-running systems. This paper presents an interesting observation that periodic rejuvenation alters the lifetime distribution of a system in a generic way irrespective of the original distribution.

Self–Rejuvenation - an Effective Way to High Availability

Most computer users know that one of the most effective ways to recover from faults such as system crashes and performance degradation is simply to reset or reboot a computer. Although these methods might be expensive in terms of downtime, they are frequently most effective. Since commercial users in most cases cannot afford the restart, they tend to use periodic rejuvenation, which is restarti...

Transient Cost Analysis of Non-Markovian Software Systems with Rejuvenation

In this paper, we perform the transient analysis of software cost models with periodic/non-periodic rejuvenation. We derive the Laplace-Stieltjes transforms of the ergodic probabilities for respective semi-Markov and Markov regenerative process models, and evaluate numerically the expected cumulative costs experienced by an arbitrary time and its time average by using the Laplace inversion tech...

www.econstor.eu Analysis of Software Aging in a Web Server

A number of recent studies have reported the phenomenon of “software aging”, characterized by progressive performance degradation and/or an increased occurrence rate of hang/crash failures of a software system due to the exhaustion of operating system resources or the accumulation of errors. To counteract this phenomenon, a proactive technique called “software rejuvenation” has been proposed. I...

An Adaptive Cost-based Software Rejuvenation Scheme with Nonparametric Predictive Inference Approach

This paper proposes an approach to estimate an optimal software rejuvenation schedule minimizing an expected total software cost per unit time. Based on a non-parametric predictive inference (NPI) approach, we derive the upper and lower bounds of the predictive expected software cost via the predictive survival function from system failure time data, and characterize an adaptive cost-based soft...

Tech Report: Schedulability Analysis for Real-time Task Set on Resource with Performance Degradation and Periodic Rejuvenation

Most schedulability analyses in the literature assume that the performance of computing resource does not change over time. However, due to ever increased complexity of computer system, software aging issues become more difficult, if not impossible, to eradicate. Hence, the assumption that computing resource has a constant performance in its entire lifetime does not hold in real world long-stan...
